8 Miles Easy in 60:00 (7:30/mile) with four 30-45sec striders during Mile 8; treadmill set to 1.0 incline; legs felt good after two days off.  

Given that I don't have any immediate plans to run a Half or Full Marathon, I've been thinking a lot about the volume of base mileage that I want to maintain in between more structured training periods.  I'm pretty comfortable at 40 miles/week, but if I want to get to the next level, do I need to go higher mileage?  Or in order to increase my speed, should I focus on the intensity/quality of my runs rather than total mileage?  

I want to do this the right way.  And I'm willing to work hard to get there, even during the off-cycle, maintenance periods between race training.

Yes, you do need to run consistently higher mileage. A healthy runner in his 20s like yourself should have it as a goal to consistently run 80 mile weeks during a marathon build-up. This would require maintaining a base mileage of 60 to 70 throughout the year.

Of course you need to have patience and work up to this over a couple year period. Also making sure to back down during occasional recovery weeks and run on as much grass/trails as possible.

Actually, I was considering my schedule today in order to determine how best to increase base mileage.

You confirmed what my instincts told me was the appropriate and necessary course moving forward.
