Wow! 5:13 and 4:97 paces on a TM. The minute at 4:97 was really good. I think I'll try to stretch out a quick minute and then see if I can string together two to four of those one-minute "Fartleks" with one mile recoveries.

9 Miles in 55:50 on TM.

I accidentally programmed the hotel TM to a preset aerobic workout that fluctuated between -1.0 decline and 2.0 incline. After manually adjusting the incline down to a 0.0 for my one-mile warm-up at 7:13 pace, I accepted my fate, responded accordingly, and ran between 5:27 and 6:27 pace for the remainder of the workout. I averaged 6:12 pace before running a one-mile cool-down.

I think you might win Western States.

From Wesley Hunt on Fri, Feb 27, 2015 at 15:34:48 from 70.215.129.126

Rob,

I appreciate you saying this, and although I believe I could run well at Western States on a course that suits me, I have to get in first!

I've missed on the lottery the past two years, but I will have a third chance (with better odds) this December, assuming I finish Leadville in August.

Leadville will be my first opportunity to run against professional runners, many with cross country or road racing backgrounds, and a few with Olympic or Olympic Qualifier credentials.

I'm running well right now, but there's so much speed in the game, and at the end of the day, I'm just a hard-headed grinder.

Volunteered as a Program Leader for the Little Rockers Kids' Marathon (1+ Mile Course); the idea is for the roughly 2,000 participants ages 7-12 to run 25.2 training miles over the course of several weeks and the final ceremonial mile with everyone in downtown Little Rock on race day.

My son, Max (7), averaged an 11:22 pace over the 1.37 Miles (Garmin) we covered.

My daughter, Sophia (5), participated as a "mini rocker" and ran her final mile later in the day at our neighborhood park. She ran 11:35!

Very proud Daddy today.

I'll take a 3 am run any day over a 9 pm one...

The only thing that got me through tonight's sanity run were visions of John Landy and his late-night interval workouts after a full day of work and graduate school.  For me, tonight's run was more modest, with 8X200m striders at Scott Field and lots of self-reflection.

If only I had Landy's top-end speed...then I could be an Olympian instead of an ultra runner!

10 Miles in 64:34 (6:28) on a warm morning for speed work at Scott Field. After a 3-Mile warm-up at 6:55/mile, I ran 6X800m Repeats at 2:40, 2:39, 2:38, 2:38, 2:44, and 2:45 with 400m recovery at 8:00 pace (2 mins).

Wesley, Considering the high miles you've been running lately, that was a great speed workout.

I'll be focusing exclusively on speed this week by targeting 6:15/mile for 800m repeats on Tuesday, and an easy 10-mile run followed by plyometric exercises in the pool on Wednesday. I'll run an easy 2.5 mile warm-up on the TM at work before the race on Friday night. Dave

I think you might be pleasantly surprised if you did jump into a 5k. 8:00 pace for the recovery is pretty darn honest too.

Rob- You cannot act too surprised considering you're the guy who drove me to high mileage three or so years ago when you told me a healthy runner in his 30s should run at least 70 miles/week.

Jason- Correct! Or at least 20+ long/slow runs on Mondays. Unofficially officially kicked off 16-week training for Leadville last week.

11 Miles in 79 mins on a warm, beautiful day along the Arkansas River Trail. Normally, I would hit the track at Scott Field on a Sunday, but after Friday's 5K and lots of yard work yesterday, a more relaxed speed session seemed in order.

Warmed up for 3 Miles with Diana, who was on her bike and pulling our son, Evan.  As they set up for a pick-nick and played, I ran 4X.75 Mile Repeats on the River Trail in 4:08, 4:18, 4:21, and 4:24, with .25 Mile recovery between repeats, before rejoining Diana and Evan for a cold drink and snacks. After about a half-hour, we ran/rode the 3 Miles back to the car at the Two Rivers Bridge parking lot.

My legs didn't have much pop today, but we had a lot of fun hanging out down by the River.

11 Miles in 82:45 (7:31/mile) in a hot and muggy day in Little Rock.  From Diana's pottery studio at the Arkansas Arts Center in downtown Little Rock, I headed north and turned west on Capitol Ave., then back north on Cross Street to pick up the Arkansas River Trail; passed Dillard's headquarters and Verizon into Riverdale before climbing Overlook for much of Mile 8 (.75 mile steep climb) into Camack Village; completed another roughly .75 mile steep climb up Keightly Dr., then crossed Cantrell onto Mississippi before turning into my Midtown neighborhood.

I'm a late entry to the Jemez Mountain Trail Run 50 Mile that has a 5:00 am start tomorrow in Los Alamos.  Just over 300 Miles of driving to go... I may even make it to the race briefing at 5:30 pm!

Beautiful day with clear skies and stunning views in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

As a late entry into this race, I knew going in that the elevation gain at altitude would be challenging after a 13-hour drive from Arkansas, and more significantly, no taper. Nevertheless, I am so glad I made the decision to run The Jimez Mountain 50, with its 11,000' of cumulative elevation gain at an altitude range between 7,080' and 10,436.

I learned a lot about myself yesterday, pulling myself out of a really dark place (mentally and physically) after getting lost and running an extra mile or so at Mile 16 at 10,400'.

Also, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to meet and visit with ultra running great, Nick Clark, who was a genuinely awesome, thoughtful guy.  Nick, who is sponsored by Altra, won the race for the third time in 8:27.

As for me, I descended the final 10 Miles like my hair was on fire to break 11 hours, finishing 20th overall, 18th male, and 10th in my age group.

AWESOME run and finish! 21st place is very strong for someone who took a wrong turn. Unfortunately, it was an extra mile at 10,400 feet where the air is very thin and your body had to work extra hard. I'm impressed that you figured out that you had taken a wrong turn in only a half-mile.

Drive carefully. ...Dave

Arrived in Rogers, Arkansas late last night for the War Eagle Trail Runs, Tailtwister 50K, in Hobbs State Park.

The race was scheduled for a 6:30 am start, but a shuttle shortage (to the start line) caused a bit of a delay, and we got things kicked off a little after 7:00 am. I jumped out to an early lead on some beautiful, rolling singletrack trails winding through the State Park. Alone in the lead all day - a hot one with temps in the 80s and 100% humidity - I was fading a bit after the final aid station, with a couple of miles to go, but I continued to push as hard as possible with no idea whether anyone was in striking distance.  She was.

Jenn Shelton passed me on the final climb less than a mile from the finish line. It was an incredible surge, as I could only watch while she crushed the hardest climb of the day. At this point of the race, I was simply trying to hold on and survive.

It really was a thing of beauty, and I learned shortly after the race that Jenn had passed the second place male (third overall), Justin Fanklin, on the final descent shortly before she locked in on me after discovering (from a photographer) that I was close. In fact, I was fortunate to hold off Justin, a good dude with whom I enjoyed visiting after the race.

This was a great day, and I want to commend my Dad for toughing out the rough conditions and completing his first 50K. His quads are thrashed from the descents, but Mark has a lot to be proud of after coming in just over 6 hours as the fourth 50+ finisher.

I ran 4:18:39, 9 minutes off the course record and exactly one minute behind the winner, Jenn Shelton.

Jon- Thanks, and no doubt about. Jenn's an impressive runner, and the smart money says she's going to have a great fall. She was very pleasant and humble after the race.

Rob- Thank you, sir. Tried to hold on during the last climb, but I was proud of the effort only two weeks removed from Jimez Mountain. By the way, I started The Boys in the Boat yesterday after the race based on your review of it in a post a few weeks back. Really enjoying it and trying not to apply every anecdote or quote to running...though it's hard.

Congrats on a great race! Jenn is a stellar runner as well so to be where you were is a really testament to your fitness.

Another great year for you Wesley!

Congrats to your dad as well!

On the drive home from Rogers, I stopped to run and hike 21 Miles in Devil's Den State Park just south of Fayetteville. It was another hot day around 85 degrees, and during the 14.9 Mile Butterfield Trail loop through the rugged and rocky Ozark National Forest, I stopped several times to soak in the cool creeks and falls.

Very pleasant workout after a tough race yesterday.

Really busy day, with work and my brother's family in town, and I didn't have an opportunity to run until past 6 pm (a rarity for me). I was scheduled for some tempo work today, and I gave it my best shot on low energy.

From my parents, I ran 8 Miles out and back along Hwy. 171. Managed 6:20 or so for Miles 2-4 (2 slightly uphill and 3-4 slightly down) and 6:30 for the final 2 Miles preceding the half-mile cool-down up the driveway. Extremely humid with lots of annoying horseflies harassing me along the way.

Dave- Thank you, sir.

Rob- Yes. I'm just curious how you knew that. I've been borderline anemic / iron deficient since I started real marathon training back in 2010-2011. I could be screwing up absorption by drinking so much coffee though...maybe I should take the iron at night?

From Rob Murphy on Thu, Jul 16, 2015 at 06:33:38 from 24.10.247.181

I didn't know. Pretty much ALL endurance athletes will suffer from at least a low-grade anemia if they don't take additional iron. Especially ones that train like you. You're a busy guy and need to pay really close attention to that and your rest/sleep habits.

AM: 14.5 Miles in 2:13 on a perfect morning in Saugatuck, Michigan, where Diana and I stayed overnight after a great day at the beach yesterday.

Starting from downtown Saugutuck, I ran to the Blue Star Hwy., which I followed for four miles or so, including a detour through the quaint little town of Douglas, until the bike path ended near the exit to the Interstate. There, I turned around and ran back to Douglas/Saugutuck, detouring through a marina, then heading toward Oval Beach on Lake Michigan. After running up and over a sand dune via 300+ wooden stairs and a nice beach trail through the woods, I ran on the beach along the Lake Michigan coast for a little over a mile to the Saugutuck Harbor Nature Area pier. After briefly stopping to ponder the vast expanse of Lake Michigan, I returned to downtown Saugutuck via the beach, trail, and road.

Great run with a little bit of everything.

Wesley, Forked Mountain Vista Point? After you pass Vista Point, and I always run the short detour to look over the vista, about 1/3 mile down the road is another Vista up a jeep road on your left for about 1/4 mile. It's also a great view with a secluded, very primitive, camp site. 8:26/mile in our heat would compete with a lot of running professional. You're definitely ready for Leadville later this month.

Deb Baker and I are planning to run 30 on Saturday morning -- targeting a 5:30 time -- a walk in the park for you. Dave

From Wesley Hunt on Mon, Aug 03, 2015 at 20:01:49 from 162.192.69.49

Dave- the Vistas are great, and Forked Mountain is particularly spectacular in the late afternoon light.

I'll be in Gatlinburg with my family, Luke's family, and our parents from the 7th-14th, but I'd love to do a 15-Mile or so trail run on the 15th or 16th...the more the merrier because pace won't matter.

From DaveM on Tue, Aug 04, 2015 at 18:40:49 from 76.125.85.156

Wesley, You're running Leadville a week later, so you decide on the distance. I'm good for any distance up to 40 miles. The longer the distance, the earlier we need to start. Dave

It was a beautiful day to run. With my Dad on board to crew me throughout the day(s), I was confident in a race strategy that played to my strengths on the more runnable sections of the course. From the start in downtown Leadville through the Twin Lakes Aid Station at Mile 39.5, we executed the plan, and I came in at 6:24, about 30 minutes off the leaders, as I prepared for the back-to-back 3,000' climbs up to Hope Pass at 12,600'. Of course, I knew going in that my "power-hiking" was more of a slog than a hike, but I was still feeling pretty confident back at Twin Lakes (inbound), Mile 61, in 13:11. My Dad, who was awesome all day, set me up for a strong finish with dry socks, shoes, and two sandwiches.

Then, inexplicably given how well the course was marked, on the way up to Mt. Elbert around Mile 63, I turned the wrong way on the Colorado Trail, added 4 Miles, and lost a lot physcially and even more mentally. With darkness approaching and no headlamp, I was fortunate to fall in with a couple of runners who pulled me in to the next aid station at Mile 75.5. My Dad did everything he could to keep my spirits up, encouraging me to enjoy the latter miles and not ruminate on the added distance/time. Over the course of the final miles, I fought through an upset stomach and chills, learned a lot about basic human kindness from other runners, and pulled myself out of a very dark place to finish in sub-25 hours, earning the big gold buckle.

Thank you all for the support. Maybe I'm just feeling sappy, but it's really nice to be part of a community - runners - who appreciate basic human triumph for its own sake. We put ourselves out there when others don't, and that has to mean something.

15 Miles in 1:57:22 on a hot afternoon in Little Rock. Picked up H Street near my house over to Hillcrest, turning onto Lee, then Kavanaugh, down to Markham; headed east on Markham past Arkansas School for the Visually Impaired, then cut over to River Trail via Park, Garland, and Gill over the railroad tracks; ran 3+ Miles along River Trail toward Big Dam Bridge, then climbed up Overlook and wound my way through Camack Village and the Heights back to Evergreen, on which I turned west back home.

Tough, hilly run.

Rob- I'm running the 25th annual Arkansas Traveler on October 3. Hal Koerner is flying in from Oregon to try and pick off a win, so it should be fun. Plus, I haven't figured out how to run a race in the mountains (at altitude) without getting lost, so I better stick around here awhile and continue to learn more about myself and improve.

Dave- Thanks, I managed the run with only 20 oz. of Gatorade. Felt pretty good running at comfortable pace.

1 Mile along Hwy. 324 from Lake Sylvia to start of Arkansas Traveler 100 course; first 16.4 Miles of AT100 course, which includes a couple thousand feet of climbing and 7.8 Miles of singletrack on the Ouachita Trail, in 2:28. Despite running conservatively and carrying only 20 oz. of water, this was only 6 mins off my 2:22 split in last year's race.

Other than a couple downed trees, the trail is in great shape. Race Directors Stan and Chrissy Ferguson and the entire AT100 committee do a bang-up job every year--and next Saturday will mark the 25th anniversary of one of the oldest and best hundred milers in the country.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
100.000.000.000.00100.00

25th annual Arkansas Traveller 100, which was the 9th 100-miler when it was first run back in 1991. This is a race with a rich history in the ultra community, and after finishing second in 2013 and first in 2014, I was back for my third year in a row with my sights on a course record.

On a perfect, early autumn day in the Ouachita National Forest, I repeated as winner and set a new course record by 53 seconds.

15:36:33.

I ran alone in the lead through Mile 35, where I was passed by Hal Koerner. I continued running alone, in second, through Mile 69, where I chased down Hal to reclaim the lead that I never relinquished. After making up 16 minutes on Hal along the rolling Forest Service Road hills between the turnaround at Mile 58 and the Powerline Aid Station at Mile 68, I pounced on the opportunity to surge ahead.

With a renewed confidence, I knew I still had an outside chance at the CR. I pushed through the Lake Winona Aid Station at Mile 84, having expanded my lead on the field, and I grabbed my headlamp for the final push in the dark. Digging deep, I gave everything that I had and hoped for the best.

"Stay present, stay focused, and do my best."

I flew down the hill from Mile 97.5, with only 19 minutes left, and accelerated into sub-7:00 pace for the final mile on the paved Hwy. 324.

It was a thrilling achievement after multiple years of high mileage and hard training. I was so fortunate to have my wife, Diana, with me all day. She probably never thought she'd become an expert crew chief when she married me, but without her, this day would not have been possible.

11 Miles in 1:23:24 on a ridiculous Christmas Eve, with sunshine, clear skies, and the temp cracking 70!

So what's the racing plans for next year?

From Wesley Hunt on Sat, Dec 26, 2015 at 21:58:39 from 72.168.144.144

Came up short in the Western States lottery for the third year in a row...only thing planned in the near term is the Black Canyons 100K in February.

Looking forward to another fun year.

Thanks for checking in.

You going for a Golden Ticket?

From Wesley Hunt on Sun, Dec 27, 2015 at 21:04:52 from 72.168.144.81

Yep. And my wife (aka crew chief) and I are going to stay over for a couple of days and drive up to the Grand Canyon. Neither of us has been previously.
