Pride necessarily sprouts and grows; a pride that can only come from relentless kneading of unwilling flesh, painful months of grinding and burning away all that is heavy, all that is strength-sapping and useless to the body as a projectile. --John L. Parker, Jr., runner/author

Nice week you got going,

Who was that high school team playing Alabama last night?

From Wesley Hunt on Tue, Jan 08, 2013 at 19:10:19 from 74.82.68.144

Thanks, Rob...

I actually feel a little guilty for how much I enjoyed every second of the beat down. From my perspective, that game ends the regional superiority discussion (specific to college football), and the Midwest (Big X) now finds itself chasing both the South and West.

7 Miles, untimed, in downtown Little Rock on a cold morning; 4 striders during last mile.

Based on the increase in the number of downtown runners from the usual 1 (me) to a couple hundred, it appears that the Little Rock Marathon training group was doing it's final group run today in advance of next week's race.

There's no bigger LR Marathon enthusiast than me, and sadly, this year, I will be out of town for work during the festivities.  Though I wasn't planning to run for the first time in four years, I was looking forward to being a spectator and/or volunteer.

Good luck to all.

Beautiful day here in Little Rock with lots of fun activities: brunch with Diana, Donna (Diana's sister), Max, and Soph at Loca Luna, yogurt for dessert at Red Mango, and lots of sunny park time playing super heroes.

Really enjoyed visiting with Donna, who was visiting from Michigan, and introducing her to The Natural State and its capital city.  I'm particularly indebted to my sister-in-law for cooking us a delicious meal on Saturday night!  Good times.

Jeb Bush reaffirmed by longstanding notion that drinking beer with the Bushes would be an enjoyable experience...but I'd still never vote for any of them.

Indeed. In fact, I'm still looking for a place to stay. How about you, Jason?

From Jason D on Fri, Mar 22, 2013 at 18:00:25 from 24.1.80.94

I imagine the hotels are pretty crazy around there. Hadn't thought about that. I'm doing Sugarloaf (it's a mountain in Maine) and Indianapolis in November again. No Boston this year, but I expect to run two qualifying times by Boston 2014. Time will tell though! Best of luck. Your mileage has been fantastic.

After a long evening of traveling, and a pretty late night, I got up early in Charlottesville, Virginia and ran 23.5 Miles along part of the Jefferson Highway (Hwy. 250) heading west from UVA before turning around in a little town about 12 miles outside of Charlottesville.

Garmin dead.  Just a relaxing pace (about 3 hours all in all) that included a couple of bio breaks and brief stops to read Historic roadside markers, including (1) the birthplace or Merrweather Lewis; and (2) the site of the first battle in Confederate General "Stonewall" Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign.

14 Miles in 1:43:08 (7:22 pace) on a coldish day with light slow along the Thomas Jefferson Parkway in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Brother dropped me off several miles east down Hwy. 53 (TJ Pkwy.), and I ran back west into C-Ville.  Run included a fly-by of President Monroe's Estate, Ash Lawn Highland, and a visit to TJ's Monticello, where I had to plead ignorance and birth ("I'm from Arkansas, sir") when stopped by a security guard who explained a ticket was needed for such exploration of TJ's grounds.  With typical Southern graciousness and manners, he nevertheless thanked me for visiting and offered me a ride to the trailhead for which I was looking.

Unbelievably historic and unforgettable run.

Boston Strong.

117th running of the Boston Marthon. I started fast, hitting the 5K mark at 18:36 and holding strong through the halfway point in 1:23:08. A couple of side stitches, first on the left, then right, brought me back down to Earth and reminded me that my primary goal was breaking three hours. I cruised at about 7:00/mile until Mile 18, where we hit the Newton hills, the most notorious of which is Heartbreak Hill, which crests at the Mile 21 Marker. The wind really kicked up as we turned onto Commonwealth toward Boston, and I wisely held back on the downhills because I could feel hamstring cramps creeping in. I fought hard the last few miles, finally kicking at the Mile 26 Marker to finish in 2:59:11.

Nice job Wesley. Quite a big difference from last year.

How are you doing?

From Wesley Hunt on Tue, Apr 16, 2013 at 13:33:47 from 74.82.68.144

Just arrived home to Little Rock. I hope it's obvious that I posted my race report prior to learning of the explosions. I was laying in my bed in the Hotel Buckminster (Mile Marker 25 along the course) and finally started receiving incoming texts...lots of them. I turned on CNN and, well, so it goes...

You know, it would be nice to think that some things are sacred, but it would appear we're moving away from that. I hate it for Boston, a great city, though I know folks there will rally around this and come back strong.

From Rob Murphy on Tue, Apr 16, 2013 at 13:38:43 from 163.248.33.220

Yeah, I assumed you posted as soon as you got back to your room. Did your dad go this year?

I think a lot of us are planning on going next year. Seems a good idea to make a feeble statement

From Wesley Hunt on Tue, Apr 16, 2013 at 13:46:02 from 74.82.68.144

No, I was alone this year.

Maybe feeble, but it's the right one.

Sun snuck in just before the race on the coldest May 3 ever recorded in Little Rock, Arkansas.  It actually made for great racing temps, but there were the 15 mph winds whipping around to deal with.  Even still, it was a very enjoyable race on a very enjoyable course starting and finishing on the front lawn of the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History. Yes, THE General MacArthur...who was born in Arkansas before moving on to Texas 8 months or so later, and then ultimately, to the Phillipines.

Arkansas is full of hidden gyms!

Finished 3rd overall cruising to a finish just over 18 minutes with no other runners (unfortunately) even close to push me or race me down the stretch.  Overall winner, Ryan Lawrence, with whom I was familiar through Arkansas running circles and finally met after the race, ran 17:19.

Big shout out to my good friend and fellow FRB'er, Dave, who ran 7 minute mile splits and finished well under 22 minutes despite still working himself back from a serious groin injury.  Dave's a fighter and had a strong showing despite the windy conditions.

24 Miles in 3:54:33 in the Ouachita National Forest.  Much of the run was on Forest Service Roads, but the grueling route also included several miles single track climbing on the Ouachita Trail, where I ran up on a black bear (who thankfully ran the other way), several deer, and a big turkey; what I did not see is a single human being, vehicle, or even much trace of human life.

As to the bear, he must have been intimidated by the fierce look on my face as I pounded away 9:30 minute miles in 96 degree heat with a heat index of 100.  My mother tells me I am fortunate, and I think she said blessed as well, to have seen a bear in the wild.  Indeed, it was cool.

Why aren't you racing more this year Wesley? With this incredibly consistent mileage, you must be eager to get out there.

I just looked up Lake Catherine State Park. Looks great.

From Wesley Hunt on Mon, Jun 24, 2013 at 17:09:13 from 74.82.68.144

You know, it's funny Rob, I really am not that eager...perhaps it's cliche, but I really do just love (and need) to run. Love trainng, running hard, and challenging myself, but perhaps because I never ran competively as a teen or in college, I rarely get the racing itch.

What works best for me is long-term goals and target races...I think...neither of which I have right now. Other than doing a lot more trail running this summer.

AM:  10 Miles in 69:38 on a nice morning in the low 70s in Little Rock.

I ran the very challenging 10-Mile Loop that has become a staple since I moved into Midtown; ran east from house on Evergreen (or H Street), crossing over Kavanaugh to Lookout, where I pick up the LR Marathon Course for nearly 5 Miles (roughly Miles 16 - 21); after the northern dash down Lookout and the rhythmic pounding on the River Trail, I pushed hard up Overlook (2/3-mile climb) and through the hills of Camack Village knowing that 70 minutes was a possibility; with no traffic on a Sunday just past 6:00 am, I opted for the usually busy Cantrel pavement as I picked it up for the last half-mile, turning back down Hughes to my house.

Any long runs planned for the long weekend?

From Wesley Hunt on Wed, Aug 28, 2013 at 19:52:21 from 74.82.64.144

I'm undecided but leaning toward a 40 miler early Saturday before college football gets going; probably two 20-mile loops through downtown and along the north side of the Arkansas River Trail with a built-in aid station at my home halfway through the run.

Legs finally started loosening up today and appear mostly recovered from last weekend.

How can you not want to go long on the weekend of UTMB?!

Jason-Really enjoying the high mileage and feeling like I've found the edge I had back in 2010-2011 when I was hell-bent on qualifying for Boston.

Luke-Talk soon; remind me to tell you (and possibly post) about my near death match with a deranged skunk during yesterday's 40 miler. The think chased me for 100 yards and then blocked the trail.

Joe-I am not yet registered but considering whether to participate in the Arkansas Traveler 100 on October 5; it's a WS qualifier; of course, I've never raced beyond 26.2.

Dropped off wife's car at Sunset Window Tinting on South University near the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR); ran east along 12th St. Toward downtown, but turned south on Park so I could run by Little Rock Central High School, then back east past Governor's Mansion, ultimately weaving my way to the Little Rock National Cemetery; turned north out of cemetery on Confederate Blvd up to Roosevelt, entering Heifer International and Clinton Presidential Center and Park from south (back entrance rarely used); crossed over Clinton Bridge into North Little Rock briefly along Arkansas River Trail, but then back north into Little Rock on Broadway Bridge to Capitol Ave; turned west to State Capitol, past "Little Rock 9" sculpture and reflecting pool; continued east along Markham, then northeast up Kavanaugh, covering the toughest three-mile stretch of the Little Rock Marathon course (Miles 13 - 16), which were coincidentally my workout Miles 12.75 - 15.75; south on Van Buren across Markham and all the tailgaters getting fired up for the Razorback game later today at War Memorial Stadium; continued south on Fair Park all the way to Asher, turning west, then quickly back north, onto University; last mile past UALR campus and back to Sunset Window Tinting.

Wow! Congrats-- I think 8:00/mile is a solid recovery pace in 90 degree heat, while reaching 100 miles for the third consec 100 mile week. Hope you give your body a taper in the next week, especially after running over 45 miles in two days. If you're available, I'm good for some short - 6 to 8 mile - runs in evening as I begin to run some doubles.

I enjoyed the experience of running the 23rd Annual Arkansas Traveler 100 (AT100), held by the Arkansas Ultra-Runners Association, in the scenic Ouachita National Forest.

Executing my strategy and running smart in the wind and whipping rain (and sleet briefly), I traded leads with winner, Brock Hime, from Mile 33 onward. This was a classic, two-man race, and Brock's performance was very impressive. The guy is all guts. Picking up a fresh pacer at Mile 68, Brock caught-up to me at Mile 75 as darkness approached (I had passed him at Mile 65 by pushing hard on a 20-mile stretch of well-maintained service roads). Though I maintained contact with Brock, this former cross country runner (University of Arkansas at Little Rock) pushed hard every time I pulled within 200 yards. In a last ditch effort, I went stealth, turned off my headlamp and flashlight, and gave everything I had on the final mile of pavement (1 of the 2.4 total miles of pavement on the course).

The end result was the closest AT100 in the history of the race, and by a longshot. We finished just over one minute apart, over 2.5 hours ahead of the field, which included multiple former AT100 winners and runners-up.

I cannot end this post without thanking my amazing crew, my Mom and Dad; my beautiful, dedicated wife, Diana, who supported this insane idea; my brother, who provided sound advice throughout my training and acted as a sounding board for race planning and strategy; and my good friend and running partner, Dave, whose discipline and commitment to running is inspiring, and who met me at the finish line with a cold beer.

From DaveM on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 16:14:04 from 67.167.155.216

Congratulations! Your race with Brock made this an AT 100 that people will be talking about for many years. It's a testimony to your overall health and fitness that when the race was completed, the Medics gave you a pass instead of placing you on the cot with an IV of saline solution.

Key Point: Neither you nor Brock Hime had ever run an ultra-marathon before, and certainly not a 100-mile run.

Most Americans have no idea about the tight geological fold structures of highly cemented sandstones that comprise the significant vertical relief of the Ouachita Mountains and the AT 100. It's a very challenging and beautiful course.

Congratulations, Wesley. This is pretty incredible to go from the marathon to a 100 miler and to run that kind of time. Love the stealth mode tactics too. I have trouble doing basic math at mile 24 of a marathon, I can't imagine having the sense to do something like this at 99 miles.

Luke / Dave - Thanks again for all your support during the training build-up. My success was largely dependent on my support team;

Jason / Tom / Jake - As to the stealth mode tactics, Brock actually indicated he would have done the exact same thing in the newspaper article that covered the race...pretty hilarious actually because he caught me red-handed!;

Rob / Allie - Certainly a mix of emotions, but the overarching feeling is gratitude (and a peaceful resolve);

Scott / Jeff / Matt - Thanks for the kind words and support, and Jeff, you're certainly correct that this was an experience that I'll never forget.

One-mile commute.

So I'm on a recumbent bike in the gym in my office building. The only upside of a recumbent, stationary bike is that it offers ample opportunity for making posts to training blogs, checking emails or facebook (if that's your thing), and even drinking coffee. I tried the elliptical trainer for 30 minutes, but I quickly realized I was redefining diminishing returns.

Though I'm having my right foot x-rayed this afternoon, I'm still in a very positive frame of mind. I really enjoyed the 100 Mile experience. And that's really what it is at the end of the day...an experience. One I'll never forget.

Guess I'll find out if my wife actually reads my blog this afternoon based on whether she let's me in the house. I don't think she wanted me to "workout" today.

Luke- There is nothing extreme about pilates, in a sauna or otherwise.

Just got back from the doctor who tried to get me to purchase (and presumably wear) a post-op boot/shoe. In refusing, I pointed out that said boot/shoe would inhibit my ability to get the aforementioned cardiovascular activity.

How's that foot doing? Maybe a minor injury (assuming it's minor) is a good thing in that it'll force you to take a break and reset. Plus, after the last few months, there may be other little things you don't even notice that need a bit of recovery.

From DaveM on Wed, Oct 09, 2013 at 18:29:13 from 66.129.51.157

Luke- Severe tendinitis; if swelling goes down after a week, should be relatively quick recovery; if not, I'll go in for bone scan/MRI to rule out stress fractures undetectable by x-ray. It actually feels much better this morning (Thursday).

2 Miles hiking around my parents land looking for the perfect spot for the grandkids' future tree house. My oldest son, Max (5), ran about a half-mile with me while we were out and about. Max has a "fun run" at his school next Wednesday, and he has been securing "pledges" for $/lap, with a maximum of 35 laps. If he goes the full 35, he'll exceed $700 in donations, all of which go to a pretty worthy cause--a public school campaign known as "camp high-five" that promotes strong character and teamwork, anti-bullying, etc.

I'm very proud of Max for the progress he has made this year in kindergarten. He's listening better, more focused, and really doing a great job supporting his classmates as part of his teacher's team learning approach.

Good run on perfect morning. Steve was really sore running the final 4 miles but we finished the last mile strong. I won't do a long run mid-week and will be ready for a faster pace by Friday.

AM: Awake anyway so out the door at 3:30 am for 8 easy, recovery miles after my highest mileage week in over a month; 70 minutes through midtown and hillcrest neighborhoods on an overcast morning with rain in the forecast.

PM: Had a few minutes before my kids' soccer games at Pinnacle Mountain State Park, so I decided to run the Base Trail, which is a single track, rocky three-mile loop around the base of the mountain. Well, cruising along enjoying the afternoon, I looked up from the trail for a split second, tripped over a rock, and ate it. Hard. Banged up knees, busted Garmin, and very sore wrist. The only silver lining was that I was able to shake it off and hobble back to the soccer fields for the 3 pm start of my daughter's game.

Wow. "Appearance is a consequence of fitness"...well, yes, Mark. Okay, so this is where I would usually make some off color comment, but after reading his Wikipedia page, I'm a little frightened.
